Can I Get Into a Hot Spring while Wearing a Bath Towel in Japan?
No, you can’t.
You can’t wear your bath towel and get into the hot tab. You can’t dip the towel to wipe your body neither a small towel or a face cloth to wash your body in the hot spring water. There are several reasons for this:
- If it is a towel was used to wipe your body, the germs on the towel will get into the hot tab.
- Some thread from the towel can get stuck in the water circulation system.
- Harmful bacteria can grow on the threads or dust from your towel in the water.
- By covering your body with a towel, you might not be able to clean your body properly and will enter the hot tab with your dirt.

Like this image from “Dog & Scissors”, some hot springs allow you to wear your towel to dip in the tab. This is not standard and normally you shouldn’t put any towels in the water. If you are coming to Japan and really want to keep your towel wrapped, ask the ryokan (hotel) beforehand if you can, or choose one that allows you to keep your towel (or swimming suits).

Even so, we are ashamed of being naked all the time. Therefore, when not got in hot springs, wrap a bath towel around the body or hide the body with a towel. When we get into, we will not put bath towels into hot springs like these image from “Blend-S”. Behavior at Kaho’s hot spring (and her figure) deserves praise!
