This anime depicts the daily lives of high school girls, and you can learn the daily, polite, and feminine words of the young generation. This anime belongs to Slice of Life, but since it has many difficult terms, it is recommended for learners with a Japanese level of Intermediate or higher.
|Title (Eng)||Hidamari Sketch|
|Genres||Slice of life|
|Sequel||Hidamari Sketch × 365|
For years, Yuno has dreamed of attending Yamabuki Arts High School, but now that she’s been accepted, it means the scary prospect of moving away from her home and family for the first time! Fortunately, Yuno quickly learns that if her new neighbors at the eclectic Hidamari (Sunshine) Apartments aren’t technically family, at least the majority share the bond of being fellow art students. From second year students like Hiro and Sae, who try to behave like helpful older sisters (mostly successfully) to her hyperactive new neighbor, classmate and best friend Miyako (who has the scariest apartment ever) Yuno begins to build the support network she’ll need for dealing with strange characters like her oddly masculine landlady, her cosplay obsessed home room teacher, her tooth-chattering principal and all of the other odd denizens who inhabit her chosen world of art.
3. Character’s Way of Speaking
Yuno is a first-year high school girl. She has a quiet personality so her voice is a little low, but she is a good character for Japanese listening practice because she can speak slowly. You can learn from her the difference between how to talk to her juniors, how to talk to her friend Miyako, and how to use honorific language to her seniors. The honorific she uses is simple, but the level of honorific that Japanese people use on a daily basis is at this level, so Japanese learners should emulate her way of speaking.
Miyako is a high school freshman who doesn’t change her attitude or way of talking to anyone. She sometimes speaks in an old-fashioned manner. However, Miyako is a good character for Japanese listening practice because she speaks clearly.
Hiro is in the second year of high school. Hiro talks calmly and always uses feminine language. Since she speaks politely to everyone, I strongly recommend that women listen and emulate her way of speaking when learning Japanese.
Sae is a high school sophomore and a professional novelist. She speaks a little manly, sometimes with a curt tone. You may feel Sae speaks fast, but that’s the speed that ordinary Japanese high school students speak. It’s a good character for listening to Japanese, but be aware that it’s a bit masculine when emulating. In reality, there are women who talk like her, but We still get the impression that she is a little masculine.
Nori appears as a high school freshman when Yuno and Miyako move up to the second grade. Nori is a bit quick in speaking, as she also speaks frankly to her seniors. She speaks in honorific language to her seniors, but in regular language to her peers, Nazuna. Listen to the difference. She is a character that I can recommend for both listening and emulating Japanese learning.
4. Terms and Talking Contents
The daily conversation of high school girls is the main theme of this anime, so there are many words that make us feel the season. From simple words like “帰省” (きせい, homecoming) and “木枯らし” (こがらし, kogarashi) to slightly more advanced terms like “夏の風物詩” (なつのふうぶつし, summer tradition), “梅雨” (つゆ, rainy season), “正夢” (まさゆめ, true dream), and “年の暮れ” (としのくれ, year-end). This anime provides you with a good opportunity to learn the Japanese language and Japanese culture while letting you feel the seasons with the aid of the video.
The words and conversations that appear in Anime are often unique and come from the free senses of high school students. For this reason, old expressions such as “好事魔多し” and “かたじけない” and young people’s words such as “ゴチになる” are sometimes used. It is a very realistic daily conversation of young Japanese people, but for Japanese learners, it is equivalent to an advanced level, so you don’t have to worry if you can’t hear it.
5. Intermediate can Learn Japanese with This Anime
This is anime that depicts the daily conversation of female high school students, and various terms appear. Since the unique conversation is advanced by the free-thinking of high school students, the difficult terms occurrence rate is relatively high at 7.1 terms/episode. In addition to all the characters speaking politely, there are also honorifics, everyday words, and feminine words, so I would like to recommend this animation to intermediate and higher learners of Japanese. There are also a lot of things to learn about Japanese seasons and culture, so it’s a very good anime to learn about Japan.
