66% Great

This is a Slice of Life anime about cooking. For Japanese people, it is a normal scene, but for foreigners, it is a valuable work where you can learn about Japanese food from various aspects. The theme song "晴レ晴レファンファーレ" (Harare Harare fanfare) is a very good song, so I recommend you to watch OP first.

2. Synopsis

Since the death of his wife, Kouhei Inuzuka has been caring for his young daughter Tsumugi to the best of his abilities. However, with his lack of culinary knowledge and his busy job as a teacher, he is left relying on ready-made meals from convenience stores to feed the little girl. Frustrated at his own incapability to provide a fresh, nutritious meal for his daughter, Kouhei takes up an offer from his student, Kotori Iida, to come have dinner at her family’s restaurant. But on their very first visit, the father and daughter discover that the restaurant is often closed due to Kotori’s mother being away for work and that Kotori often eats alone. After much pleading from his pupil, Kouhei decides to continue to go to the restaurant with Tsumugi to cook and share delicious homemade food with Kotori.

Amaama to Inazuma follows the heartwarming story of a caring father trying his hardest to make his adorable little daughter happy, while exploring the meanings and values behind cooking, family, and the warm meals at home that are often taken for granted.

3. Character’s Way of Speaking

Inudsuka Kouhei says in a typical male tone, “xxx か” and “xxx だな”. He speaks to his students Kotori, Shinobu, and fellow teachers in formal, adult honorific language. He also speaks modestly to Kotori’s mother, saying, “xxx していただく”. Since he is a teacher, his level of honorific language is very high and he can properly use it. I would like Intermediate Japanese learners who are going to work in Japan to learn his way of speaking.

Inuzka Tsuzumi says “xxx だね” and “xxx ね” in a lively girlish tone. As a child, she still calls “おとさん” with a lisp, “おとうさん”. She calls herself “つむぎ” not “わたし”. Calling yourself by name is a common tendency among kindergarten children.

Iida Kotori speaks with simple honorific expressions such as “です” and “ます” at the end of the word, as opposed to being fair as a teacher. She usually talks like a typical high school girl, “xxx の” or “xxx でしょ”. Including the use of honorific expressions, her way of speaking is very suitable for listening and emulating Japanese language learning.

Kojika Shinobu says “xxx しなよ” and “xxx だな” in a boyish tone. Her tone of voice is strong, but the tone of her voice conveys an atmosphere that she is a reliable older sister. It is not uncommon in reality for women to speak in a slightly masculine tone.

Yagi Yuusuke says “xxx だ” and “xxx な” in a slightly rough male tone. It is easy to be misunderstood because of his strong and scary tone, but he is in fact a kind person. He is a character with an interesting gap between the way he speaks and his inner self.

4. Terms and Talking Contents

This anime has a lot of conversations about cooking and family. There are a lot of words like “みじん切り” (みじんぎり, finely chopped) and “落とし蓋” (おとしぶた, Drop a piece of aluminum foil directly on the food to cover it entirely) that you often hear in recipe books and cooking shows. It may be hard to tell at first, but you can see it in the video. Also, the “餃子” (ぎょうざ, pot sticker), “お好み焼き” (おこのみやき, Okonomiyaki), “イカの煮付け” (いかのにつけ, Simmered Squid) and other dishes that Japanese people usually eat are often served, so it is a very meaningful animation for those who are interested in Japanese food culture.

5. Beginners can Learn Japanese with This Anime

It is a very simple conversation because it is mainly a conversation between the father of the Inuzuka Family and the daughter of a kindergarten child. Difficult terms include cooking methods, cooking utensils and ingredients, but even if you don’t understand them, they won’t be a big obstacle to learning Japanese or watching anime. The animation has a low difficulty terms occurrence rate: 3.0 terms/episode, and is highly recommended for Beginner’s Japanese learners as the conversation content and terminology difficulty level are also at the Middle School level. If you are interested in Japanese cooking, you can use this opportunity to learn about cooking methods and cooking utensils.
