91% Outstanding

This is a historical masterpiece, which needs no explanation. It has got an old-fashioned character design since it is from 2007, but it is an Anime with sufficient value to exceed that. In addition, its following Anime is even more excellent monumental masterpiece. I would like all of you to watch this piece as it is one of the few outstanding works.

2. Synopsis

Clannad

There is a romance adventure game with the same name “CLANNAD”, a story full of pure emotions, themed on “bond” between people. Trying to reproduce the game’s world view, this Anime is a story of the interaction between the main character Tomoya and the girls (Nagisa, Kyo, Ryo, Tomoyo, Fuuko and Kotomi) and their growth.

The animation is made by Kyoto Animation, who became overwhelmingly popular through their products such as “AIR”, “Kanon” and “K-On!” They have produced a high-quality Animation work with for instance the girls’ fine quality facial expression and depiction of a landscape that gives you a warm feeling.

3. Character’s way of Speaking

・Okazaki Tomoya (岡崎 朋也, おかざき ともや)

Clannad

(C)VisualArt’s/Key/光坂高校演劇部

Tomoya talks with an ordinary high school boy’s way: “xxx だよな” and “xxx だな”. He uses the first person “俺” (おれ, ore). In a monologue, his tone becomes “xxx だ” and “xxx だった”, just like the narrative part of a novel. His way of talking is a good listening material for a Japanese learner of the same age.

・Sunohara Youhei (春原 陽平, すのはら ようへい)

Clannad

(C)VisualArt’s/Key/光坂高校演劇部

Although Youhei uses tones of ordinary high school boy just as Tomoya, such as “xxx だ” and “xxx じゃないの”, he gives more an impression of a clown than Tomoya. The first person of Youhei is “僕” (ぼく, boku).

・Furukawa Nagisa (古河 渚, ふるかわ なぎさ)

Clannad

(C)VisualArt’s/Key/光坂高校演劇部

Nagisa talks with a polite tone: “xxx です” and “xxx ですね”. Some of her Japanese, such as “ごめんなさいです” could sound a little unnatural. It expresses the disturbed feeling by letting the character deliberately talk in an unnatural way, and that is how the characters are distinguished in this work. Nagisa basically talks with a polite and correct tone, I can recommend listening to her as listening and emulating material for Japanese learners.

・Furukawa Sanae (古河 早苗, ふるかわ さなえ)

Clannad

(C)VisualArt’s/Key/光坂高校演劇部

Sanae talks, just as Nagisa, with the polite tone “xxx です” and “xxx ます”. It sounds basically very similar to the way Nagisa talks, but Sanae sounds even politer. I would recommend female Japanese learners to listen to Sanae and use this for emulating practice.

・Furukawa Akio (古河 秋生, ふるかわ あきお)

Clannad

(C)VisualArt’s/Key/光坂高校演劇部

Akio talks with a rough man’s tone, such as “xxx だ”, “xxx なあ” and “xxx だがな”. The second person pronoun he uses: “てめえ” is a more violent expression of “お前”. Akio talks with such a rough tone, however, what he says can sound often rather empty-minded.

・Fujibayashi Kyou (藤林 杏, ふじばやし きょう)

Clannad

(C)VisualArt’s/Key/光坂高校演劇部

Kyou’s way of talking “xxx じゃない” and “xxx しなさいよ” sounds somewhat arrogant. She is masculine, energetic and talks very clearly. Good material for Beginner’s listening practice. For emulation, I would recommend this character to learners in Advanced level and above (since a straightforward emulation of this character by a female learner can make a mannish impression).

・Fujibayashi Ryou (藤林 椋, ふじばやし りょう)

Clannad

(C)VisualArt’s/Key/光坂高校演劇部

Ryou talks gently using the polite tone “xxx です” and “xxx ます”. She is a twin sister of Kyou, but their characters and ways of talking are completely opposite. I would recommend female Japanese learners to listen to and make use of her talking when practicing emulation.

・Ichinose Konomi (一ノ瀬 ことみ, いちのせ ことみ)

Clannad

(C)VisualArt’s/Key/光坂高校演劇部

Kokomo talks with a quiet girl’s tone, using “xxx なの” for instance. She never talks a lot and also never talks hastily. Some of her lines consist only of one word, such as “食べる?” and “またね” and that makes her sound somewhat childish.

・Sakagami Tomoyo (坂上 智代, さかがみ ともよ)

Clannad

(C)VisualArt’s/Key/光坂高校演劇部

Tomoyo’s way of talking is quite assertive, for example: “xxx だ”, “xxx しろ” and “xxx してやる”. She sounds mannish when you hear only her talking. Such a tone is often seen in a strong female character. It is a good material for the Japanese learners but you need to keep the fact in mind that she can sound quite mannish, just as Kyou, when using this as an emulation material.

・Ibuki Fuuko (伊吹 風子, いぶき ふうこ)

Clannad

(C)VisualArt’s/Key/光坂高校演劇部

Fuuko talks with a polite tone, such as “xxx ください” and “xxx ですね”. She gives a childish impression compared to other characters because she speaks with a lisp.

4. Terms and Talking Contents

Clannad

(C)VisualArt’s/Key/光坂高校演劇部

This Anime is focused on casual daily conversations between high school students and their families. As the story is set at school, you hear many school-related terms such as “校則” (こうそく, school regulations), “生徒会” (せいとかい, student councils) and “受験” (じゅけん, entrance exams). Tomoya, the main character, is a friendly boy, who can talk easily with anybody. However, he has something dark in his heart, and when talking to his father, his irritation can explode.

When characters talk about their true feelings, we can get their feelings that are not able to be communicated in writing. You can listen to, both in a positive and a negative way, a real “Japanese (two-sided)” conversation. This would be very good training for imagining the characters’ feelings, not only from their conversation but also from their facial expressions and behaviors.

There are difficult terms when they joke in their daily conversations. This might make it difficult to understand; however, jokes are mainly in the first half of the Anime, and as the number of jokes decreases in the last half, difficult terms occurrence rate gets also lower. In the main story itself, there are no difficult terms. Overall difficult terms occurrence rate is 1.4 terms/episode, which is why this Anime can be strongly recommended to beginners.
